I-95(N-S)/I-495(N-S, E-W) Duplex |
Interstates 95 and 495 join for 33 miles (26.11 miles in Maryland, 0.11 miles in the District of Columbia, and 7 miles in Virginia) around the east side of Washington, DC, in Prince George's County, MD, Washington, DC, and Arlington City and Fairfax Co., VA. Technically, in federal interstate logs, I-495 does not follow I-95 but halts where I-95 becomes the Capital Beltway. For driver convenience, I-495 is signed on the entire beltway, including the I-95 section.
Alex Nitzman 7/97Southbound on busy I-95 nearing the DC Beltway. I-95 follows I-495 around the southeast half of the full-loop I-495. I-495 changes directions along the duplex. Here in the northeast part of the Beltway, I-495 changes from east-west to north-south.
The northern interchange is a complicated one. There are actually two ways to get from I-95 south to I-95/I-495 south. The first is to stay left and follow the I-95 mainline as it merges with I-495 from the left. The first exit on I-95/I-495 is for US 1, but US 1 exits I-495 as I-95 merges, so the I-95 to US 1 connection is difficult. Staying right here, the exit lanes split for I-495 in each direction, and then one can merge onto I-495 south before needing to exit onto US 1.
