Northbound on DE 2 at the beginnings of DE 4, DE 896, and its business route, Business DE 2. DE 2 joins DE 4/DE 896 to bypass Newark to the south, while Business DE 2/DE 896 begins a duplex into the town.

Northbound on Elkton Road/Business DE 2/DE 896. Before several of the Newark state routes were moved to bypass the town, this road was DE 2.
Eastbound Delaware Routes 273 joins Business DE 2/DE 896 for 0.13 miles as a three-way duplex and 0.3 miles as a perpendicular triplex through Newark in New Castle County.

Business DE 2/DE 896 meets up with DE 273 in western Newark. All three routes follow different paths depending on the direction of travel. The separation of north- and southbound traffic on DE 896 and east- and westbound traffic on Business DE 2/DE 273 leads to three parts of the Business DE 2/DE 273/DE 896 triplex distinguished by their directions. This photo shows one segment, Business DE 2 east/DE 273 east/DE 896 north at the eastern split. DE 896 turns left onto College Avenue to travel one block north to the next piece of the triplex. Business DE 2/DE 273 eastward continues through Newark.

After a block, DE 896 north meets Business DE 2/DE 273 east from the left at this intersection. The routes combine straight ahead to form another piece of the duplex, Business DE 2 west/DE 273 west/DE 896 north on Main Street.

Westbound on Main Street where the triplex splits in three and forms yet another piece. DE 896 turns northwestward toward the northeasternmost piece of Maryland. DE 273 heads east toward truck route duplexes in Maryland. Business DE 2 turns southwestward, but picks up the other directions of DE 273 and DE 896 to create the third piece of the triplex, Business DE 2 west/DE 273 east/DE 896 south, a three-way triplex.

An unusual sign assembly along Business DE 2 west/DE 273 east/DE 896 south, which is the block of Elkton Road between Main Street and Delaware Avenue. Business DE 2 used to be simply DE 2, but when the change was made, the Business sign was placed below DE 273 instead of above DE 2 where it belongs. The Business DE 2/DE 273 signs are pointing to Delaware Avenue, while Business DE 2/DE 896 head southwestward on Elkton Road. Putting these route markers on the same sign post as a speed limit sign is not common practice. A left turn leads to the first piece of this triplex which forms most of a complete loop.
