In May 2003, the Odessa-Smyrna segment of the DE 1 tollway was completed and opened. The northern two miles of US 13/DE 1, which used the DE 1 freeway and DE 299, became DE 1 only and DE 299 only as US 13 was relocated back to its non-freeway alignment.
US 13 south on Sixth Street in downtown Odessa. US 13 follows two one-way streets through town. US 13 meets DE 299 in the heart of town, just ahead.
Nearing the junction with DE 299, a sign indicates that US 13 south/DE 299 west is the way to reach DE 1. The sign reads: TRUCK ACCESS / TO DE 1 / SMYRNA / DOVER.
US 13 south turns west onto DE 299. US 13 north crosses DE 299, but does not join it as US 13 south does.
First reassurance signs along the duplex. US 13 is not signed here probably because the duplex was temporary.
On the US 13 south/DE 299 overpass just west of Odessa. US 13 south leaves its traditional alignment through Odessa and follows DE 299 to DE 1. Here US 13 turns left onto the southern part of the northern segment DE 1, while DE 299 continues ahead toward US 301 and DE 15.
Another view of the northern split, this time from DE 299 east. US 13 north does not reach this interchange because it remains on its routing through Odessa.
