John Hanson Highway Multiplexes

I-595(unsigned, E-W)/US 50(E-W)/US
301(N-S) TriplexThe I-595/US 50 and US 50/US 301 duplexes
overlap for 11.9 miles from Bowie to Annapolis in Prince George's and
Anne Arundel Counties. The easternmost 1.4 miles of the triplex are joined
by Maryland Route 2 in the I-595/US
50/US 301/MD 2 quadruplex.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
US 301 joins onto the I-595/US 50 duplex where MD 3 ends. This is the
view southbound at the end of MD 3.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The interchange marks Exit 13 of I-595 and thus 13 miles of I-595/US
50 go toward Washington, DC, before meeting teh Capitol Beltway, I-95/I-495.
I-595 is completed unsigned to avoid too many concurrent route numbers
to the east, so here US 50 west does not appear to be a duplex.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Now facing north on US 301, MD 3 begins as US 301 exits onto I-595/US
50.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The interchange was rebuilt in the early 1990s from a cloverleaf interchange
to one with a flyover ramp.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The first reassurance shields for US 50/US 301 heading east.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The next exit is to MD 424, which connects MD 2 and MD 3. US 50/US 301
crosses the Chesapeake Bay a few miles past Annapolis.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Another pair of reassurance shields, which are found plentifully on this
highway, but always without an I-595 shield.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The next two exists are preludes to Annapolis. I-97 was built to connect
Baltimore to Annapolis, and MD 665 is a partial bypass on the west side
of Annapolis.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The 48 states' shortest two-digit interstate begins here.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Next, MD 665 exits toward MD 2 and western Annapolis. MD 2 soon joins
the I-595/US 50/US 301 triplex for Maryland's
only quadruply numbered highway, but only two numbers are signed there.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
One more shot of the beginning of MD 665. The ramps from I-97 join MD
665 first. Here MD 665 splits, giving traffic a chance to return to or
enter I-595/US 50/US 301.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The last exit before MD 2 joins is for MD 450, which leads to both MD
178 and MD 2 south. This is the exit to MD 2 south, as there is no direct
interchange in this direction. For the rest of I-595/US 50/US 301 east, see the I-595/US
50/US 301/MD 2 page. Local Names
