John Hanson Highway Multiplexes

I-595(unsigned, E-W)/US
50(E-W)/US 301(N-S)/MD 2(unsigned, N-S) QuadruplexThe I-595/US 50/US 301 and US
50/US 301/MD 2 triplexes overlap for 1.4 miles near Annapolis in Anne
Arundel County. Having I-595 end here splits the US 50/US 301/MD 2 multiplex
in two pieces: one piece that is secretly also I-595 (from the MD 2 south
interchange to the adjacent MD 70 interchange) and one piece without the
secre I-595 designation (MD 70 interchange to the adjacent MD 2 north
& MD 450 south interchange).
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Heading eastbound on I-595/US 50/US 301, with I-595 not signed. The MD
450 exit leads to MD 2 south, as there is no direct exit. MD 2 joins after
this exit.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
MD 70 at the next exits leads straighted into Annapolis, Maryland's capital
city. This interchange marks the end of I-595 without any sign to announce
the terminus. Ahead, several of the interchanges with US 50/US 301 are
substandard for an interstate, and so I-595 must end before then. Between
MD 2's entrance and I-595 end is Maryland's only quadruplex, which is
signed as a US 50/US 301 duplex. MD 2 is unsigned for a different reason:
Maryland just does not like to sign concurrent state routes. To continue east on US 50/US 301/MD 2 and to the Bay Bridge, jump below
to the US 50/US 301/MD 2.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Now heading west on US 50/US 301/MD 2 as I-595 begins at MD 70.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Next, MD 2 south exits toward MD 450, which does not have an exit in
this direction. I-595/US 50/US 301 continues ahead.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The exit ramp that MD 2 south follows has a spur to a connector to MD
178, which serves Annapolis from the northwest.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Now on MD 2 north at the intersection with MD 450. MD 450 is the way
to I-595/US 50/US 301 west, while MD 2 is the way to I-595/US 50/US 301/MD
2 east, since both MD 450 and MD 2 have partial interchanges with the
freeway.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Closer view of the intersection. While you wait to turn to I-595/US
50 west/US 301 south, you can buy some flowers.

US 50(E-W)/US 301(N-S)/MD 2(Unsigned,
N-S) TriplexMaryland Route 2 joins the US 50/US 301
duplex for 3.0 miles, and the eastern 1.7 miles of the triplex are east
of I-595.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Eastbound on US 50/US 301 after I-595 ends and MD 70 passes. Technically,
US 301 should be marked north-south through all of Maryland, but on the
strictly east-west routing of US 301 on US 50, some leniency is used.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The offramp carries both exits, whose ramps split. MD 450 south used
to be MD 2 before MD 2 was rerouted onto US 50/US 301 freeway to bypass
Annapolis.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
MD 2 north re-begins amid exits to US 50/US 301.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Southbound on MD 2 approaching US 50/US 301 and the beginning of MD 450.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The two southbound lanes split to follows the current MD 2 or the old
MD 2 (now MD 450).
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
This interchange is difficult to classify, as it seems rather unique
in design. The flyover ramp that curves to the left joins a cloverleaf
ramp from US 50 west/US 301 south to MD 450 south or US 50 east/US 301
north. From here, MD 2 south, there is a second chance at following MD
450 south. From US 50 west/US 301 south, the exit can be used as a U-turn.
Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The view approaching MD 2 on US 50 west/US 301 south. At the next exit,
for MD 70, I-595 begins and joins US 50/US
301/MD 2. Local Names
