I-70(E-W)/US 40(E-W)/US 522(S-N) Triplex

70 40 522

The I-70/US 40 and I-70/US 522 westbound duplexes overlap for 0.53 miles near Hancock in Washington County. There is no east/southbound triplex.

I-70/US 40 westbound nearing the Hancock interchange, Exit 1. Soon US 522 north joins the mainline, then I-68/US 40 split off to the west.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

Since US 522 and I-70 will share the freeway into Pennsylvania, US 522 north traffic is urged to stay on I-70.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

US 522 south exits first.

Next, I-68 begins and US 40 follows, but there is no mention of US 522 following I-70.

From the view of I-68 eastbound into the interchange, I-70/US 522 exits left toward Pennsylvania.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

I-70/US 522 exits and the mainline is called I-70/US 40/US 522. That is because there is no triplex in the east/southbound direction. US 522 south exits I-70 east before US 40 east joins the mainline. Thus the triplex is only in the north/westbound direction.

Dan Moraseski 9/02/02

US 522 exits at Exit 82A before US 40 east (shown here) joins I-70—that merger is just ahead. To the left in the distance is the I-70/US 522 split, which is more easily seen in the next photo.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

The no-triplex situation is apparent here, southbound on I-70/US 522. US 522 south exits left, so that the mainline is I-70 alone. The lane in the distance, mergin from the right, is US 40. So US 522 south and US 40 east just miss each other, leaving I-70 a brief amount of mainline all to itself.

I-70(E-W)/US 522(S-N) Duplex

70 522

Interstate 70 and US Route 522 join for about 3 miles (1.16 miles in Maryland) from Warfordsburg, PA to Hancock, MD in Bedford County, PA and Washington County, MD. The southern 0.53 miles of the westbound duplex are joined by US Route 40 in the I-70/US 40/US 522 triplex.

Timothy Reichard 11/05/04

The southern split of the duplex is in the interchange with I-68, I-70, and US 40 in Maryland. Just to the north, the first reassurance shields are posted in typical Maryland fashion: oversized interstate marker and normal-sized US route marker. The blue sign in the distance is the Welcome to Pennsylvania sign at the state border. I-70/US 522 enters Pennsylvania.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

Here is the northern split, a much simpler diamond interchange (compared to the southern split interchange of I-70/US 40 and I-68) with one cloverleaf ramp in southern Pennsylvania, about two miles north of the border.

Jason Ilyes 5/15/02

Signs at the end of the offramp, with I-70 west in the background. A right turn leads toward Needmore and the US 522/PA 655 duplex. A left turn leads to PA 484 on the other side of the overpass over I-70.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

The one cloverleaf ramp is the one to I-70 east/US 522 south. This shot is taken on the overpass over I-70.

Jeff Kitsko 6/4/04

Eastbound on I-70 before reaching US 522, another "follow" sign assures traffic that one can follow US 522 south by staying on I-70.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02

The only reassurance shields southbound are these, which include an unnecessary TO banner and oversized SOUTH banner.
