I-70(E-W)/US 40(E-W)/US 522(S-N) Triplex

The I-70/US 40 and I-70/US 522 westbound duplexes overlap for 0.53 miles near Hancock in Washington County. There is no east/southbound triplex.

I-70/US 522 exits and the mainline is called I-70/US 40/US 522. That is because there is no triplex in the east/southbound direction. US 522 south exits I-70 east before US 40 east joins the mainline. Thus the triplex is only in the north/westbound direction.

The no-triplex situation is apparent here, southbound on I-70/US 522. US 522 south exits left, so that the mainline is I-70 alone. The lane in the distance, mergin from the right, is US 40. So US 522 south and US 40 east just miss each other, leaving I-70 a brief amount of mainline all to itself.

I-70(E-W)/US 522(S-N) Duplex

Interstate 70 and US Route 522 join for about 3 miles (1.16 miles in Maryland) from Warfordsburg, PA to Hancock, MD in Bedford County, PA and Washington County, MD. The southern 0.53 miles of the westbound duplex are joined by US Route 40 in the I-70/US 40/US 522 triplex.

The southern split of the duplex is in the interchange with I-68, I-70, and US 40 in Maryland. Just to the north, the first reassurance shields are posted in typical Maryland fashion: oversized interstate marker and normal-sized US route marker. The blue sign in the distance is the Welcome to Pennsylvania sign at the state border. I-70/US 522 enters Pennsylvania.

Here is the northern split, a much simpler diamond interchange (compared to the southern split interchange of I-70/US 40 and I-68) with one cloverleaf ramp in southern Pennsylvania, about two miles north of the border.
