Unlike most state route duplexes in Maryland, this MD 97/MD 140 is well signed as a route with two concurrent numbers. So even though MD 140 is the main route, MD 97 is signed as well.

First reassurance shields westbound. Most of the duplex has three through lanes and a persistent right turn lane.

The Westminster bypass has two interchanges. The first is with MD 27, which leads into the heart of Westminster.

The second interchange is the western split of MD 97/MD 140. MD 31 meets MD 140 just west of the split.

MD 97 exits onto the Littlestown Pike. MD 97 becomes PA 97 a few miles to the north upon crossing the state line, and then Littlestown is the first town in Pennsylvania.

Now eastbound on the Westminster bypass. This is the exit for MD 97. The onramp from MD 97 joins MD 140 just head.

Two miles to the east, MD 97 splits off to the south on Malcolm Drive, which is a minor, eastern bypass of Westminster.

Duplex shields along a side road that meets the busy Westminster bypass. The bypass is under study because of high traffic volumes and congestion. The Maryland State Highway Administration has created a .pdf brochure outlining the study.
