US 15(N-S)/US 40(W-E) Duplex
US 15 and US 40 join for 0.70 miles on the Frederick Expressway in Frederick
in Frederick County.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
US 40 has a short existence between the I-70/US 40 eastern duplex and
the US 15/US 40 duplex, each as part of the bypasses of Frederick. US
40 is merging onto this mainline, which is I-270's north end. Immediately
ahead are the exists for US 340 east and west, where US 15 north joins
US 40 west.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
First, the Jefferson Street exit, which may or may not still carry US
340 east to MD 144 in the center of town. The onramp that merges under
the overpass carries US 15 north onto the US 40 freeway, thus marking
the south end of the US 15/US 40 duplex.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
The next part of the cloverleaf interchange is the ramp to the east end
of the US 15/US 340 duplex.

About a half mile to the north, the US 15/US 40 duplex splits. MD 144
(the Old US 40 through downtown Frederick) heads into town, while US 40
heads the other way toward two other versions of itself: Alt US 40 and
I-70.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
US 40 exits on this cloverleaf interchange to end the duplex. US 40 eventually
heads west to another I-70/US 40
duplex and then a lengthy I-68/US 40 duplex.
Thus US 40 will see a lot of freeway to the west, much of it on interstates.
US 15 also follows many tens of miles of freeway from here to its north
end near Corning, NY, but for now
only two of those miles are on an interstate: I-180/US
15/US 220.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
Both ends of the US 15/US 40 duplex are cloverleaf interchanges. Thus
after US 40 exits US 15, it can follow another cloverleaf back on the
duplex in the opposite direction. US 40 west continues ahead.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
Now following US 40 east into Frederick, US 40 is unusually included
in the JCT sign for US 15.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
US 40 exits onto the Frederick Freeway to meet US 15. Neither US 15 nor
US 40 go to Washington, DC, but US 40 leads to I-270, the Frederick-Washington
highway. Frederick's segment of MD 144 begins ahead and travels downtown.

Timothy Reichard 1/13/03
US 40 merges onto US 15 south, which is about to exit onto US 340.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
Southboud reassurance shields are posted in the middle of the duplex.
So here at the southern split cloverleaf, US
15/US 340 begins at the first exit.

Timothy Reichard 8/25/02
Gore-point signs for the US 15/US 340 exit. US 40 next merges onto I-70
while I-270 begins.
