Southbound on US 301 as the route narrows to one lane and merges with MD 5.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

To the south, before reaching Waldorf, MD 5 splits from US 301 on its new alignment, bypassing Waldorf.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

US 301/MD 5 widens to six lanes southbound as the two major highways split.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

The southern split. Three left turning lanes carry MD 5 to the south.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

MD 5 north on the new divided-highway bypass. As MD 5 nears US 301, both routes are signed.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Northbound on US 301/MD 5, which begins with 5 northbound lanes to complement the 6 southbound lanes.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

US 301(N-S)/Business MD 5(N-S) Duplex
US 301(N-S)/Old MD 5(N-S) Duplex

US Route 301 and Maryland Route 5 used to join for a duplex extending 0.95 miles further south than the duplex extends today. MD 5 east-west through Waldorf is now Business MD 5, which by internal records ends at US 301 rather than following US 301 north to reconnect to MD 5 as a business route should connect. This implied US 301/Business MD 5 duplex is signed as US 301 alone or US 301/MD 5 (outdated).

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Southbound on US 301/Business MD 5. Not all of the signs along the old US 301/MD 5 duplex have been updated now that Business MD 5 is the proper designation. Technically, this road is now US 301 alone.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Nearing the old southern split of US 301/MD 5 in Waldorf. MD 228 begins here, too.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

A closer view of the intersection. Technically, Business MD 5 begins here to the left without following US 301.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Approaching the southern split from US 301 northbound.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Northbound on US 301 at the southern split.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

Signs on Business MD 5 as it meets US 301. MD 5 is no longer here.

Timothy Reichard 1/28/03

A mile to the north, Business MD 5 is implied to meet MD 5. This is the implied northern end of the US 301/Business MD 5 duplex and the true southern split of US 301/MD 5.
