US Routes 50 and 301 join for 43.0 miles from Bowie to Queenstown
in Prince George's, Anne Arundel, and Queen Anne's Counties. Unsigned
Interstate 595 and Maryland Route 2 join near Annapolis for the I-595/US
50/US 301, I-595/US 50/US
301/MD 2, and US 50/US 301/MD
2 multiplexes. This page covers the part of the multiplex east
of MD 2 where only US 50/US 301 runs.

US 50 east/US 301/MD 2 north where MD 2 north splits. I-595 ended
a couple of miles ago. US 50/US 301 continues eastward on a substandard
expressway. Just east of this MD 2 exit, MD 648 intersects the freeway
with little notice.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
After MD 648, Bay Dale Drive serves the Arnold area on the Broad
Neck peninsula. Broad Neck is surrounded by the Severn River, the
Magothy River, and the Chesapeake Bay, over which US 50/US 301 eventually
crosses.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
MD 179 leads to Annapolis to the south.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Since MD 179 ends at the interchange, the exit to what would be MD
179 northbound is not assigned a route number. Cape Saint Claire Road
leads unsurprisingly to the town of Cape Saint Claire. College Parkway
bypasses Arnold to the north and connects to MD 2.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Reassurance shields between the freeway and the frontage road that
runs from the MD 179 exit east to the end of the peninsula. There
are frontage roads on both side of the freeway, and each is a segment
of MD 908, formerly MD 179.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The next exit is just a right turn lane to the frontage road.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
Only a few feet lie between the freeway and the frontage road. Traffic
has to slow way down to "exit," then stop before turning
onto the frontage road.

Timothy Reichard 9/8/02
The next exit is the last before US 50/US 301 crosses the Chesapeake
Bay on the William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge, better known
locally as the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge or just Bay Bridge. Sandy Point
State Park occupies the east fringes of the peninsula.
