US Routes 50 and 301 join for 43.0 miles from Bowie to Queenstown
in Prince George's, Anne Arundel, and Queen Anne's Counties. Unsigned

50/US 301, I-595/US 50/US

2 multiplexes. This page covers the part of the multiplex east

The William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge is one of only two
bridges across the Chesapeake Bay. The other crossing is the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge Tunnel, which carries US 13 through an underwater toll
tunnel from the Delmarva Peninsula to the Virginia Beach area. The
next crossing north of the Lane bridge is the US 40 crossing across
the Susquehanna River, just north of where the river becomes the bay.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
The bridge is 5 miles long and has separate spans for east- and westbound
traffic.

This picture and the next three pictures show more views of the bridge
as one traverses from the west shore to the east shore.

This last view of the bridge shows the westbound span as seen from
the eastbound span near the eastern end of the bridge.

Upon returning to solid ground on the east shore, US 50/US 301 resumes
its expressway status. The bridge leads not to the eastern shore of
the Chesapeake, but to Kent Island. The first exit on the island is
for MD 8, which serves the west coast of Kent Island.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
The next exit is one of many exits that are more like right turns
than offramps to the minor road. Thompson Creek Road serves Stevensville.
Exit 38B has only partial access and serves Stevensville only from
the westbound lanes.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
Cox Neck Road serves Benton Pleasure and Cox Creek Acres along the
middle peninsula of Kent Island, called Cox Neck.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
MD 522 is the second of only 3 state routes on the island (MD 8 was
first). MD 552 serves the eastern peninsula of the island, better
known as Alley Neck.

South Piney Road is a connecting road to the main east-west route
of olden times before the US 50/US 301 expressway. That main route
was US 50, but is now MD 18/Queenstown Road.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
Dundee Avenue is another short connector to MD 18.

Timothy Reichard 3/22/03
The last exit on Kent Island is for MD 18, which becomes Main Street
at this end of the island.

The Kent Narrows Bridge connects Kent Island to the Eastern Shore.
See Page 3 for the rest of the
eastward US 50/US 301 tour.
