Route numbers that do not fit into
any apparent numbering scheme are listed below. In many cases, a randomly assigned
number was assigned in a nonrandom manner to another route in the past. Most randomly
assigned numbers remain today. Most of the randomly assigned routes designated
before the Interstate highway system was created run east-west if the number is
odd and north-south if even (like the original 1928 system), whereas later routes
have the directions reversed (like the Interstate system).
