Interstate 81 and US Route 322 join for 3 miles on the north side
of Harrisburg in Dauphin County.

Like the I-83/US 322 duplex, the I-81/US 322 duplex begins and ends
at large, high-speed interchanges, the kind that should connect freeways.
I-81 and I-83 meet at the eastern split, which is a typicall freeway-to-freeway
"Y" interchange. I-81 and US 22 meet at the western split,
a full stack interchange with flyover and flyunder ramps. Here is
the view on I-81 north approaching the western split, the stack interchange.
At the time these photos were taken (August 2002), the entire duplex
was under a widening/reconstruction project.

This page shows many views of the stack interchange. On I-81 north,
ramps leave for the US 22/US 322
duplex and for US 22 east, which leads to PA 230 east.

Exit ramps in a stack interchange typically split after leaving the
mainline. One ramp curves to the left as a flyover ramp over the mainline
to meet the highway that heads left, while the other ramp simply connects
to the highway to the right. This type of exit occurs in all four
directions, making the eight ramps in the interchange.

Flyover ramps in the middle of the interchange.

The beginning of the I-81/US 322 duplex. US 322 enters from the ramp
on the right.

Here is the same interchange as seen from US 22 westbound. US 322
travels from one duplex to another here. These signs have been replaced
as part of the I-81 reconstruction project.

New signs were posted as the I-81 reconstruction project progressed.

The ramps to the I-81/US 322 duplex and I-81 south leave US 22 and
then split.

Here with the new overhead signs, the two ramps split apart to their
respective destinations in the stack interchange.

Three miles to the east, US 322 prepares to leave I-81 for I-83.
This is the scene at the Progress Avenue exit, which is the one interchange
along the duplex (not counting the ends). This middle interchange
was partially closed due to construction.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
More dirt than highway or grass appears during the construction.
I-83 begins at the upcoming interchange, which is the eastern split
of I-81/US 322 and the northern split of I-83/US
322.

New signs and sign gantries were erected as the construction project
continued into later phases. Now a diagrammatic guide sign shows the
I-81 & I-83 split.

Now a look at the duplex in the opposite direction. On I-81 southbound,
there is this sign showing which interstate to choose for which exit.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Next is the exit to I-83, a left exit to the freeway's beginning.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Next up along I-81/US 322 is the Progress Avenue exit and a new sign
for the US 22/US 322 TO PA 230 exit. These signs exhibit the contrast
between the original guide signs of the freeway and the newer signs,
as well as the exit renumbering of 2001.

An old version of the newer guide sign of the previous photo.

As the stack interchange approaches, US 322 exits onto US 22.

I-81 south going through the stack interchange. Flyover ramps fly
over the mainline in all four directions.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Three levels of bridges rise over the mainline.

Backing up a little bit, here is the ramp from I-81 south to US 22
east into Harrisburg. The ramp at the right is US 322 leaving I-81
and joining US 22.
