Interstate 83 and US Route 322 join for 4 miles on the east side
of Harrisburg in Dauphin County.

The I-83/US 322 duplex is full of interest. We begin at the southern
split, which is one of the more complicated interchanges in the state,
the Eisenhower Interchange. Here I-83 and US 322 split, I-283 begins,
and US 322 runs between two sub-interchanges in such a way such that
US 322 east shares a roadway with both I-83 north and south at different
places. This is the north end of I-283.
There is also a peculiarity on these overhead signs. Pennsylvania
right-justifies exit tabs for exits to the right, and left-justifies
exits from the left lane. Here there is a rare third exit as I-283
becomes I-83/US 322, and the exit tab is center-justified.

Here is I-83 northbound approaching the interchange.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
On I-83 northbound, first I-283 exits to the south.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
The next observation is unusual. There is a lane to the right that
is separated from the rest of the mainline. It's actually US 322 east
along I-83 north, just before I-83 north and US 322 west joinmore
on this later.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Next, I-83 splits off on one lane to the north while the mainline
soon becomes US 322.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
I-83 curves more than 90 degrees to the north. US 322 west soon joins.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Before continuing north, we return to the southern split as seen
on US 322 west. Here ramps to I-283 and I-83/US 322 leave at the same
place. The curvy bridge carries I-83.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
A closer view of the interchange.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Another view of the stack interchange. The curvy bridges carry I-83,
and the straight bridge carries I-283. The sign between the mainline
and ramp read NORTH I-83 TO I-81.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
US 322 does not directly join I-83. First it follows Eisenhower Boulevard
with a partial cloverleaf interchange with Derry Street. Then the
eastbound and westbound lanes of US 322 separate to connect to I-83
on each side of the mainline, which is hidden by the trees.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
First reassurance shields on I-83/US 322. The main function of this
freeway stretch is to reach I-81, where I-83 ends.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
I-83/US 322 meets two interchanges between the ends of the duplex.
The southern interchange is for Union Deposit Road, which serves east
Harrisburg.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
A few miles to the west, US 22 and US 322 join for the long US
22/US 322 duplex. After splitting near Harrisburg, the two routes
meet again here.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Past the US 22 interchange, I-83 will soon end at I-81, and US 322
will join I-81 for another interstate highway duplex. I-81 north goes
to I-78, the main route to the Allentown area.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
The north- and southbound lanes separate as the interchange with
I-81 approaches. From here, US 322 serves little unique purpose for
some 60 miles, after which it serves as the main route to State College.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
US 322 splits to the west on I-81 south. The I-81/US
322 duplex serves the northern Harrisburg area. The barrier is
part of the widening reconstruction project of I-81 from Front Street
to this I-81 & I-83 interchange. All of I-81/US 322 was under
construction at this time, August 2002.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Now we approach the northern split via I-81 south. The I-81 &
I-83 interchange is not only the northern split of I-83/US 322, but
also the eastern split of I-81/US 322.

Douglas Kerr 9/27/03
New signs and sign gantries were erected as the I-81 reconstruction
project continued into later phases. A diagrammatic guide sign was
placed along I-81 north/US 322 east at the interchange with I-83.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Reassurance shields southbound.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
The true I-83/US 322 southern split is at Exit 47, where technically
US 322 joins/leaves the I-83 freeway.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
US 322 splits at Exit 47. We now follow an unusual routing through
the Eisenhower Interchange, which, as hinted at earlier, brings US
322 back on I-83 but in the opposite direction. Initially, US 322
joins Eisenhower Boulevard.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
US 322 from here (Eisenhower Boulevard) east to at least PA
241 bare HERSHEY banners, as US 322 is the main route through
Hershey, the Chocolate Capital of the World. This location is the
interchange with Derry Street.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
A few tenths of a mile to the south, eastbound US 322 exits
onto I-83 northbound.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
(This photo was shown above.) US 322 east leads to the separated
lane at the right.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02
Once I-83 exits the mainline, that lane of US 322 east joins the
mainline as a more normal freeway.
