US 11 and PA 641 join for a mile through Carlisle in Cumberland County.
The western half of the duplex is US 11/PA 641 alone, while the eastern
half is joined by PA 74.

US 11 and PA 641 join in the western outskirts of Carlisle.

These shields stand at the western split as viewed from PA 641 eastbound.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
This unusual junction shield stands along US 11 southbound/PA 641 westbound
just before reaching the western split. It's rare in PA to place a JCT
sign to announce the upcoming split along the duplexed road. More typically,
the sign is omitted and only stands along one of the roads thats about
to merge; i.e., this shield would more commonly be placed on US 11 northbound
just west of the western split.

PA 74 joins US 11/PA 641 for a half mile three-way duplex through Carlisle.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
PA 74 southbound joins the US 11/PA 641 duplex here, just a half mile
east of the US 11/PA 641 western split and a few blocks west of the eastern
split.

Here are the shields at the PA 74 western split in the Dickinson College
campus. PA 74 enters from the north and turns left onto the duplex.

Here are the three-way signs just east of the PA 74 western split.

To the east, near the eastern split, the opposite three-way shields stand
in the center of Carlisle.

In the beautiful center of downtown Carlisle, the triplex meets PA 34
and splits. US 11/PA 34 northbound splits to the left, US 74/PA 641 continues
straight ahead, and PA 34 southbound heads to the right. This is the view
facing east along US 11 northbound/PA 74 southbound/PA 641 eastbound.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Here is the view facing north along PA 34 one block south of the eastern
US 11/PA 74/PA 641 split, which is also the southern split of the US 11/PA
34 duplex. US 11 joins PA 34 from the left, and the two routes form a
duplex heading straight ahead to the north.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Moving forward a block, US 11 is signed separately from PA 74/PA 641
here at the same, center intersection.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Here is the same intersection from a third view, facing west along PA
74/PA 641 a block from the center intersection.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Like the signs along PA 34 northbound, US 11 is signed closer to the
center intersection than the other routes. PA 34 is not mentioned from
this direction.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Finally, here is the view facing south along US 11/PA 34. The PA 74 and
PA 641 signs are abbreviated, as is the case for signs along PA 34 northbound
. US 11 splits from PA 34 here.

While PA 74 and PA 641 form a duplex with US 11 from the center of Carlisle
to a few block to the west, the two routes are also duplexed for a few
blocks east of the center of Carlisle.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Reassurance shields for the PA 74/PA 641 duplex stand just east of the
center intersection, where US 11/PA 74/PA 641, US 11/PA 34, PA 74/PA 641,
and PA 34 meet.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
A half mile to the east, the two routes finally split to meet I-81 at
partial interchanges about two miles away. The shields have been placed
overheard by themselves (not on big green signs), an unusual practice
in the state.

US 11 and PA 34 form a same-way duplex for a few blocks in Carlisle.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Here are the first reassurance shields north of the center intersection
of Carlisle. That intersection is the southern split of US 11/PA 34, where
US 11 joins PA 74/PA 641. For more coverage of the southern split, see
the US 11/PA 74/PA 641 triplex above.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
A few blocks north of the southern split, and similar to the US 11/PA
641 western split, a JCT PA 34 shield stands along US 11/PA 34 northbound.
JCT shields for a given route rarely stand along that route.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Just ahead, PA 34 splits from US 11.

Timothy Reichard 2/24/02
Here is the view from PA 34 southbound as the route joins US 11.

Reassurance shields stand just south of the northern split.
