US 22(E-W)/US 322(E-W) Duplex

US Routes 22 and 322 join for a long, 55-mile, same-way duplex through Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, and Dauphin Counties.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02The eastern split is on the north side of Harrisburg, where US 322 leaves I-81 and joins US 22. This is the view along US 22 westbound. The interchange is a full stack interchange.

Timothy Reichard 8/19/02Leaving the Harrisburg region, US 22/US 322 follows the old freeway north out of Harrisburg. The freeway bypasses the old US 22/US 322, which followed Front Street. From here to the Susquehanna River crossing to the north, US 22/US 322 meets several state routes near their termini at interchanges. Here is PA 39, which extends slightly to the left to end at Front Street.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02The main north-south truck routes along the Susquehanna River follow the west shore once US 22/US 322 crosses to that shore a few miles ahead. Halifax, however, is on the east shore, so a sign is posted to tell the best route.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02PA 443 ends at Front Street just like PA 39, and has an interchange with US 22/US 322 quite near to that end. After this interchange, the old freeway ends and the new Dauphin bypass (completed 2000) begins. So here are new signs on an old road.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02Dauphin has two exits in this direction. The first, to the downtown area, leads to the old PA 225, which was rerouted to the north when US 22/US 322 was upgraded to a freeway that now bypasses the town.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02A characteristic railroad bridge was reconstructed just south of the Dauphin borough.
Timothy Reichard 8/19/02The new Dauphin bypass meets PA 225 west of town. Dauphin no longer needs to be the control city for PA 225, so Halifax is listed. The earlier truck sign advised the use of PA 147, which also goes to Halifax. There is a PA 147/PA 225 duplex there.
