US Routes 22 and 322 join for a long, 55-mile, same-way duplex through
Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, and Dauphin Counties.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
West of US 11/US 15, the US 22/US 322 freeway traverses the rolling
mountains of Perry, Juniata, and Mifflin Counties on the way to Lewistown.
The first exit after Amity Hall is the Watts exit, which provides
access to Huggins Road and the town of New Buffalo.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
Three miles ahead, US 22/US 322's mainline splits in elevation, with
the westbound lanes (shown here) elevated higher on the mountain side
than the eastbound lanes. Down the mountain to the left is the Juniata
River, which US 22/US 322 parallels all the way to Lewistown. The
Midway exit connects to the old US 22/US 322 with a partial diamond
interchange. East of this exit, the old US 22/US 322 was upgraded
to this freeway, but to the west, the old road was bypassed.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
Newport lies a mile south of the freeway on the other side of the
Juniata River, and PA 34 is the road to take to get there.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
The Millerstown exit is next. The interchange connects to the old
US 22/US 322 just east of town, and the old road leads to PA 17 at
its town square.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
Thompsontown is the site of the next exit. PA 333 serves this small
town, East Salem to the north, and the south shore of the Juniata
River to the south.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
US 22/US 322 connects to Pfoutz Valley Road via a two-ramp partial
interchange. Traffic can exit westbound or enter eastbound. Pfoutz
Valley Road connects to the old US 22/US 322.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
Both US 22/US 322 and PA 333 lead
to PA 75 near Port Royal. PA 75 was the only state route that was
extended north of the old US 22/US 322 to meet the US 22/US 322 freeway.

Timothy Reichard 12/28/03
PA 35 serves Mifflintown and Mifflin to the south on opposite shores
of the Juniata River and McAlisterville and Richfield to the north.
PA 35 has the most food and gas services of the exits along the freeway
between US 11/US 15 and Lewistown.

Timothy Reichard 12/31/03
The final exit before Lewistown was reconstructed in 2003. Previously
a partial diamond interchange, the other two ramps were added to upgrade
the interchange to a full one. Arch Rock Road serves the westernmost
part of the old, bypassed US 22/US 322.

Timothy Reichard 12/31/03
Just beyond this interchange, the freeway ends and connects back
to the two-lane US 22/US 322 for the six miles known as the Lewistown
Narrows.

Timothy Reichard 1/8/03
After sharing 55 miles of freeway, US 22 and US 322 finally split
on the east side of Lewistown. This is the west end of the Lewistown
Narrows, a six-mile segment of two-lane roadway that is notorious
for high accident rates. But never fearPennDOT is here! Beginning
in 2003 and ending in 2008, this section will be upgraded to a freeway
like adjacent portions of the highway. As of 2003, this interchange
was being reconfigured. As shown here, the US 322 freeway (the Lewistown
bypass) begins and exits the US 22 mainline.

Timothy Reichard 1/8/03
Curiously, the mainline remains US 22, which is a surface highway
leading into Lewistown, while US 322 exits to begin a freeway, the
old, eastern Lewistown bypass.

Timothy Reichard 1/8/03
Beginning in early 2003, this interchange was revamped as part
of the Lewistown Narrows project. US 322 (onto which US 22 was rerouted, extending the duplex) became the mainline as it veers
to the right on the eastern Lewistown bypass. The US 22 that remains
straight ahead became Business US 22 and serves the downtown.

Timothy Reichard 1/8/03
Eastbound on Business US 22 (former US 22). US 22 passed under this overpass, which carried
part of the end of the US 322 freeway. This bridge was been demolished and replaced with the interchange reconfiguration.

Timothy Reichard 1/8/03
Past that overpass, US 322 merged from the right, thus beginning
the US 22/US 322 duplex and the Lewistown Narrows.

Timothy Reichard 10/14/02
Here was the view merging onto US 22 from US 322.

Timothy Reichard 12/27/05
In 2005, the interchange reconfiguration was completed, making US 322 the mainline and US 22 the exiting road, which is the reverse of the previous reconfiguration where US 22 was the mainline and US 322 exited. On November 21, 2005, the northern Lewistown bypass opened, which rerouted US 22 onto both bypasses and changed US 22 in the city to Business US 22. So the former US 22/US 322 western split is now a modern interchange with Business US 22 exiting the US 22/US 322 mainline.

Timothy Reichard 11/25/05
A closer view of the new Business US 22 interchange on the east side of Lewistown. US 22/US 322 remains on the mainline, and Business US 22 exits and crosses over the overpass. US 22/US 322 is now extended a few miles to a new overlap with US 522.
