The US 22/US 322 and US 22/US 522 duplexes overlap by a mile through Lewistown in Mifflin County.

Southbound on US 522 entering Lewistown and meeting the US 22/US 322 eastern Lewistown bypass. These signs predate the US 22/US 522 northern Lewistown bypass, which opened on November 21, 2005. US 522 south now turns right to join US 22/US 322 on the eastern bypass. Before 2005, US 522 south followed US 322 in the opposite direction, exited at Charles Street, and joined former US 22 (now Business US 22) through Lewistown.

Westbound on US 22/US 322 at the interchange with US 522 north. US 522 south joins just ahead.

US 22 west/US 322 west/US 522 south approaching double interchange with Electric Avenue and US 22/US 522/northern Lewistown bypass. While the northern bypass is built to modern freeway standards, the eastern bypass (built as US 322 in the 1950s) is a substandard expressway with narrow shoulders and short merge/exit areas on its ramps.

At the newly opened (November 21, 2005) interchange with new US 22/US 522, US 322 continues as the mainline while US 22/US 522 exits.

Now approaching the same interchange on the new pavement of the northern Lewistown bypass. This photo was taken on the fifth day since the opening ceremony. The interchange shown serves both the US 22/US 322/US 522 expressway and Electric Avenue (pre-1950s US 322).

A closer view of the new stack interchange. The ramp to the right leads to Electric Avenue, the old main drag leaving Lewistown on its north side. The interchange with US 322 is comprised of the freeway on the hillside ahead and the blue bridges connecting the two bypasses. US 22/US 522 curves to the right on the lower blue bridge to join US 322.

Now on US 322 eastbound approaching the same interchange. US 22/US 522 joins from the right and continues straight ahead.

A few days after the opening of the new US 22/US 522, the added US 22 shield (immediately below the US 322 shield) has not been uncovered, and there is no sign for US 522. The right lane is the onramp from US 22/US 522 and quickly becomes the offramp for US 522 north.

US 522 north exits onto Walnut Street before meandering its way out of town and toward Selinsgrove. Prior to the opening of the new US 22/US 522, US 522 joined the freeway here (see US 322/Old US 522) and continued southward to the next exit. With US 522 exiting here, the freeway is now the US 22/US 322 duplex all the way to the outskirts of Harrisburg.
