Road Photo Trip 8/5/01 - Clearfield and Western Centre Counties Part IV

by Timothy Reichard

<< Back to Part III <<

I turned eastward onto the PA 879 Clearfield bypass just east of the town. The road is almost a Super-2 around the town but returns to uncontrolled access east and west of town. The segment of road near the I-80 interchange was quite congested, but traffic thinned out quickly eastward as I approached another terminus.

The northern terminus of PA 970 is at PA 879 in Shawville. No END PA 970 sign is posted. I-80 is about 2 mi to the southwest. Photo shot 8/5/01.

PA 970's other end would be one of my last stops on this trip. I already photographsed PA 879's eastern terminus, so I headed westward to capture the western terminus. A few other termini would be on the way.

The northern terminus of PA 453 is at PA 879 in Curwensville. PA 969 ends a few blocks to the south. Photo shot 8/5/01.

PA 969 would then be a convenient subsequent stop.

The western terminus of PA 969 is at PA 453 in Curwensville. PA 453 ends just a few blocks to the north (left). Photo shot 8/5/01.

PA 969 was not shown on my Pennsylvania road map. I knew that a lot of 8xx and 9xx PA routes were not lengthy routes, so I chose to explore this route to its other end. After about 5 mi, the route met up with PA 729 and duplexed briefly. PA 729 had been my next destination because it and PA 879 both ended in Grampian and PA 729 would lead me back to the x53 routes. Nonetheless, I decided to continue on PA 969 to see where it went, hoping I could resume my previous plan. As it turned out, PA 969 met my expectations.

The western terminus of PA 969 is at US 219 in Bells Landing. PA 969 parallels the western trickle that becomes the West Branch Susquehanna River. Photo shot 8/5/01.

I figured PA 969 would cross US 219, but instead it ended there. This was convenient, as US 219 would take me to my next two termini and allow my original plan to resume.

The western terminus of PA 879 is at US 219 and PA 729 in Grampian. PA 729 ends at the same intersection. Photo shot 8/5/01.

PA 969 led me just 4 mi west of this intersection, and US 219 led me right to it. This intersection is one of the few that would have more than one terminus. Later I would visit another such intersection. For now, going a block foward and making a left turn took me to my next photo shot.

The northern terminus of PA 729 is at US 219 and PA 879 in Grampian. PA 879 also ends at this intersection from the right. US 219 heads northbound coming from the left and continuing forward. Photo shot 8/5/01.

Next stop: photographing that duplex I had not expected to see a few minutes earlier.
