The PA 147 Corridor

Overview and Routing

In the 1970s and early 1980s, the northernmost 23 miles of PA 147 were bypassed and relocated to an expressway from US 220 in Halls to PA 405 in Chillisquaque. PA 405 was extended to replace PA 147 from near I-80 south to Chillisquaque. North of I-80, the new four-lane PA 147 expressway became I-180. South of I-180 to PA 405, the two-lane super-2 expressway remains as PA 147, a feature of this page.

The PA 147 super-2 expressway will be upgraded to a four-lane interstate-standard expressway from 2002-2004 as the first part of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway project. The Thruway will ultimately be an interstate-standard expressway connecting the Selinsgrove bypass (US 11/US 15) to I-80 by bypassing Hummels Wharf, Shamokin Dam, and Northumberland. PA 147 will again be relocated south of the super-2 expressway, and PA 405 will again be extended southward along current PA 147 to PA 61 in Sunbury. PA 147 will be rerouted across the West Branch Susquehanna River to join US 15 from Winfield to Shamokin Dam along the new highway. PA 147 will then connect to US 11/US 15 at the PA 61 interchange and replace PA 61 on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge over the river.

PA 147 currently continues southward from Chillisquaque through duplexes in Northumberland (US 11/PA 147), Sunbury (PA 61/PA 147), and Halifax (PA 147/PA 225) and ends at an interchange with US 22/US 322 across the Susquehanna River from Duncannon. PA 147 parallels the Susquehanna River for most of its length, departing from the river only on the super-2 expressway.
