The I-180/Old PA 147 Expressway
I-80 to
August 2002

Timothy Reichard 8/11/02
The beginning of I-180 westbound. The PA 147 expressway easily transitions
into I-180 at the I-80 via two changes: PA 147 changes to I-180, and the
55 mph speed limit becomes 65 mph. The onramp from I-80 merges just ahead.

Timothy Reichard 8/11/02
As part of the I-80 widening between US 15 and I-180, I-180 is briefly
6 lanes between the I-80 interchange and I-180's first exit. Note also
the new I-180 westbound shield. I-180's exit number are backwards, as
though I-180 runs north to south instead of west to east.

Timothy Reichard 8/11/02
Exit 1 is for the Susquehanna Trail, or Old PA 147. This pre-freeway
PA 147 parallels I-180 all the way north through Muncy.

The next exit is for PA 54, halfway between the PA
54/PA 405 and PA 44/PA 54
duplexes.

Yet another construction project. The bridge across the West Branch Susquehanna
River in Muncy is under great repairs.

The third I-180 exit, Exit 5 to Turbotville.

Now heading back eastbound on I-180.

I-80 can be seen in the distance ahead.

Still at Exit 1, there are three interesting signs posted along I-180.
First, there is a US 15 trailblazer. I-80, just ahead, is the preferred
way to cross the Susquehanna and reach US 15that is, preferred when
construction isn't going on along the way. Second, there is milemarker
#1. East-west interstates should be numbered from west to east, but I-180
is numbered backwards. Third, the little white reference sign says: "SR
180 590." On interstates the segment number (590) increases by 10
each mile. This is evidence that I-180 should be 59 miles long (plus the
next mile to I-80). This was the original plan, which would have made
an interstate from I-80 near Lock Haven, through Williamsport, and back
to I-80 here.

The end of I-180 and the beginning of PA 147 as the Milton bypass.

The END shield for I-180 and the first reassurance shield southbound
for PA 147. PA 147 retains four lanes for another half mile.
