1 A Brief History

Alternate US 1 in southwestern Baltimore provides full access to I-95 and I-695, while US 1 itself has only a partial interchange with I-695 to/from the northwest. Alternate US 1 carries more traffic than US 1 as it follows Caton Avenue and Washington Boulevard. Alternate US 1 is completely unsigned within the Baltimore city limits and along the entire southbound route. Northbound Alternate US 1 is signed in Baltimore County only along the route and on signs along I-95 and I-695.

Southbound on US 1/Wilkens Avenue at Alternate US 1/Caton Avenue in southwestern Baltimore. Alternate US 1 begins to the left. A right turn on Caton Avenue leads straight to the Hilton Parkway and Truck US 40's western end.
