A
Brief History
|
Business US 1 was first signed in the 1960s when the US 1/MD 24 bypass
was built on the northwest side of Bel Air. US 1 and MD 24 were moved
to the bypass, while Business US 1 and MD 924 took over the old routing
through the town. In a state where multiplexes are rare, Bel Air sports
both US 1/MD 24 on the bypass and Business US 1/MD 924 in town. In
2000, the adjacent, northerly segment of US 1 through Hickory was
bypassed, and Business US 1 was extended through the town to meet
US 1 on the northeast side. Business US 1 is known locally as Belair
Road (south of Bel Air), Baltimore Pike (southern Bel Air), Main Street
(Bel Air), Broadway (Bel Air), Hickory Avenue (northern Bel Air),
and Conowingo Road (Hickory).

The grass to the right used to be US 1, which followed current Business
US 1 into Hickory. The Hickory Bypass (on US 1) begins straight ahead.

Business US 1 and MD 147 both end at US 1 and each other at the same
intersection in Benson. This view is along US 1 northbound.

Business US 1 splits off to the right from US 1 just ahead, while
MD 147 is a left turn away. This intersection marks the southern end
of the Bel Air-Hickory bypass, which carries US 1 and a brief US 1/MD
24 duplex to the north. US 1 is the Belair Bypass north of the intersection
and Belair Road to the south, Business US 1 is Belair Road, and MD
147 is Harford Road.

The business route is signed in three different color styles throughout
its route: black on white, green on white, and white on green. Interstate
business routes are commonly signed with green shields and do not
need an extra banner shield for BUSINESS, and Maryland's State Highway
Administration has imitated that style here. The direction banners
also have all three color styles.
