Uniontown has had a western bypass since the early 1970s, which takes
US 119 off the streets of town. In the early 1990s, the bypass was
extended on the southeast side of town to allow US 40 to follow it
instead of traversing the streets through town. As a result, Business
US 40 took over US 40's route. Southwest of town and in Hopwood, Business
US 40 follows the National Pike, which becomes Main Street in Uniontown.
In town, eastbound Business US 40 follows Main Street and South Street
while westbound traffic follows Fayette Street. Both directions recombine
on the west side of Uniontown on the National Pike.

By the next year, the Business US 40 sign was replaced by this overhead sign, and the US 40 freeway was re-striped.
