A Brief History
The longest business route in Pennsylvania, which just become longer still in 2003–04, follows old US 220 from Bald Eagle, through Tyrone and Altoona, to Sproul. US 220 was moved section by section onto the new I-99 freeway between Altoona and Bald Eagle. Once most of the freeway relocation was complete in the mid-to-late-1990s, Business US 220 was signed first in Altoona and later northward to Bald Eagle and southward to Sproul. For now, Business US 220's north end is at US 220/PA 350 in Bald Eagle, but it may change by 2007 when the I-99/US 220 freeway is complete from there to State College. Business US 220 might be extended "northward" by a mile south to the soon-to-be-rebuilt PA 350 interchange with I-99/US 220, or the business route might be extended northward to Port Matilda or beyond to meet the new Alternate US 220 even further north. The southern end of Business US 220 was moved in 2003–04 from I-99/US 220 on the south side of Altoona to the Sproul exit 15 miles to the south. Between the ends, PA 453, PA 764, PA 36, US 22, and PA 164 run concurrently with the business route. Business US 220 follows: Pennsylvania Avenue, Tenth Street, and Washington Avenue in Tyrone; Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Valley View Boulevard (northbound), and Plank Road in Altoona; and William Penn Highway and Old Route 220 south of Altoona.

Business US 220 was initially designated only as far north as Altoona, ending at I-99/US 220 at Exit 33 or 39.

Business US 220 was extended to the Sproul exit (Exit 15) of I-99/US 220 in 2003–04.
