Before the early 1990s, Indiana, PA had a full expressway bypass for
US 119 and a full bypass for US 422, but only the part stretching east
of US 119 was a freeway. West of US 119, US 422 followed Wayne Avenue
(the old alignment of US 119) north toward Indiana, Indiana Springs Road
to the northwest, and then Philadelphia Street (the original US 422 alignment)
westward. Construction finished in the mid-1990s to build the other half
of the US 422 expressway bypass. Upon completion, US 422 was moved onto
the new bypass, and Business US 422 was designated and signed along the
old US 422 routing. Business US 422 is SR 4422 along its entire length
except for the US
119/PA 56/Business US 422 triplex (SR 0119).
